El film es una coproducción de Dreamworks y Warner Bros.
 y se basa en el libro "Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima", escrito por James Bradley y Ron Powers. La película esta ambientada en la Segunda Guerra Mundial
y la historia esta contada desde el punto de vista de Bradley,
 cuyo padre fue uno de los seis soldados que izaron la bandera americana en la batalla de Iwo Jima
, pero no fue hasta la muerte de James Bradley, en 1994,
que su hijo no supo la historia del heroísmo de su padre.
Walter será Hank Hansen, uno de los soldados que izaron la bandera.
Segun The Hollywood Reporter, Paul Hagáis,
que ya trabajó con Eastwood en "Million DOllar Baby", ha escrito el guión.
